Town Needs A Keen Financial Eye On A Board That Can’t Say No To Spending

                If you want to know one of the persons, singly responsible for blocking the tax override last year, that person was Heather Fitzpatrick.  Heather has been a member of the Westford Finance Committee for the last nine years.   During that time her keen eye for figures, has kept the Town out of one financial quagmire after another.

           Last year, it was Heather, in the face of a full court press for a tax override by the school department and the select board, who raised the issue of the excessive funding tucked away inside the school’s reserve accounts.   This prompted a close examination of those accounts which ended up saving the schools 400K  and let the air out of an override balloon that would have squeezed at one point 6.8M in new revenue out town taxpayers.  School Superintendent Dr, Chew said that the reserve fund issues was the single most critical reason for the override failure.
